What is a Gold IRA rollover?
A Gold IRA rollover lets you move funds from an existing retirement account — such as a 401(k), IRA, or TSP — into a self-directed IRA backed by physical gold and silver. This process is tax-free and penalty-free when done correctly. Instead of paper assets tied to Wall Street, your savings are converted into tangible metals that hold value through every market cycle.
How to add positions to your portfolio
Your Precious Metals Portfolio allows you to track all your gold, silver, platinum, and palladium holdings in one place. You can add positions, record sales, view your performance, and export your data. This guide covers everything you can do.
Adding a New Position
To add metals to your portfolio, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the Positions page and make sure you are logged in.
- Click the Add Position button near the top of the page.
- Fill out the form with your purchase details:
- Position Name (Required) — Give your position a memorable name, such as “2024 Gold Eagle” or “Silver Bars – January Purchase”.
- Description (Optional) — Add any notes about this purchase, such as where you bought it, serial numbers, or storage location.
- Metal Type (Required) — Select the type of precious metal: Gold, Silver, Platinum, or Palladium.
- Weight (Required) — Enter the weight of each item. For example, if you have 1 oz coins, enter “1”.
- Unit — Select the weight unit: oz (troy ounces), g (grams), kg (kilograms), lb (pounds), or dwt (pennyweight). Troy ounces (oz) is the most common unit for precious metals.
- Quantity — Enter how many identical items you have. For example, if you bought 5 identical 1 oz coins, set Weight to “1” and Quantity to “5”.
- Cost (Optional) — Enter the total amount you paid for this purchase. This allows the system to calculate your profit or loss.
- Purchase Date (Required) — Select the date when you acquired these metals.
Click Save Position to add it to your portfolio.
Understanding Pool Weight
You may notice a checkbox labeled Pool/Collateral Weight. This option is for tracking metals that are not individual items but rather a total weight, such as:
- Scrap gold or silver
- Pool-allocated metals from a dealer
- Jewelry or items where you only know the total weight
When you check this box, the Quantity field is automatically set to 1. You simply enter the total weight of your metals. This is useful when you cannot count individual pieces.
Editing a Position
To update the details of an existing position:
- Find the position you want to edit in your portfolio list.
- Click the Edit button on that position.
- The form will open with all current values pre-filled.
- Make your changes to any field (name, description, weight, cost, etc.).
- Click Save Position to update.
Note: If you have already disposed of some of this position, you cannot reduce the quantity or weight below the amount already sold.
Deleting a Position
To remove a position from your portfolio:
- Find the position you want to delete.
- Click the Delete button.
- Confirm that you want to delete the position.
Important: You can only delete a position if you have not recorded any sales (dispositions) against it. If you have sold part of the position, the delete option will not be available.
Recording a Sale (Disposition)
When you sell some or all of your metals, you should record the sale to track your profit or loss:
- Find the position you want to sell from in your portfolio.
- Click the Dispose button.
- A form will appear showing your position details and available quantity/weight.
- Fill out the disposition details:
- Quantity to Dispose — How many items you are selling (for regular positions).
- Weight to Dispose — How much weight you are selling (for pool-weight positions).
- Proceeds — The total amount you received from the sale.
- Disposition Date — The date of the sale (must be on or after your purchase date).
- Notes (Optional) — Any notes about this sale.
As you fill out the form, you will see a Profit/Loss Preview that calculates your gain or loss based on the proportional cost basis. Click Confirm Disposition to record the sale.
After recording dispositions, you can view them in the Dispositions tab of your portfolio. Each disposition shows the weight sold, your cost basis, proceeds, and profit or loss.
Exporting Your Portfolio to CSV
You can download your complete portfolio data as a spreadsheet file:
- Go to your Portfolio Dashboard.
- Look for the Export CSV button in the holdings section.
- Click the button to download your data.
The exported file includes:
- All your positions with name, description, metal type, and weights
- Cost, current value, and gain/loss for each position
- Purchase dates
- A summary section with totals
- Current metal prices at the time of export
The file will be named portfolio-YYYY-MM-DD.csv with the current date and can be opened in Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet application.

- Find your “American Gold Eagles 2025” position
- Click Dispose
- Quantity to Dispose: 1
- Proceeds: 2200
- Disposition Date: Select today’s date
- Notes: “Sold to local dealer”
- Review the Profit/Loss Preview
- Click Confirm Disposition
Your position will now show 2 remaining coins, and the disposition will appear in your Dispositions tab with the calculated profit or loss.
Example: Adding Scrap Silver (Pool Weight)
If you have 15.75 ounces of scrap silver that you paid $350 for:
- Click Add Position
- Position Name: “Scrap Silver Lot”
- Description: “Mixed silverware and jewelry”
- Metal Type: Silver
- Check the Pool/Collateral Weight box
- Weight: 15.75
- Unit: oz
- Cost: 350
- Purchase Date: Select your purchase date
- Click Save Position
